William Herschel’s Forty-Foot Reflecting Telescope
This famous telescope has its own Wikipedia article. It was a backyard project by the famous astronomer and his wife, and it set a record for largest telescope in the world that was not broken for decades. This illustration comes from a splendid book called The Wonders of the Heavens, published in 1834.
